The principal aim of all State Studs is to provide high quality, performance tested stallions to the State´s breeders at a reasonable fee. In order to achieve this, the State Stud purchases young stallions aged between 2 1/2 and 3 mainly from the Northrhine-Westfalian licencing hows but also from other licencing shows throughout Germany.

To provide adequate coverage of Northrhine-Westphalia the State Stud also runs a network of 22 insemination and covering stations. These are managed by State Stud personnel and the stallions are available throughout the breeding season from nid February to end of July. Some stallions are also sent to private covering stations and about 50 stallions usually remain at the State Stud, where the biggest insemination and covering station is located. The active stock of stallions presently includes 75 Warmbloods, 3 Throughbreds and 20 Rhineland Heavy Horses. Another 50 horses (stallions and geldings) are provided for the German Riding School.

The Northrhine-Westphalian State Stud can be visited throughout the year. Stables are only open during working hours. Admission is free.
